Best Ball and Injury Risk: How to Draft When You Can't Make Moves

The single biggest difference between best ball and standard redraft is that you cannot add or drop players once the draft ends. This one rule changes everything about how you should think about injury risk.

The Two Counter-Intuitive Outcomes

Outcome 1: High-injury-risk players are worth less in best ball than in standard fantasy, even at the same expected production. You can’t hedge with a waiver pickup; you’re stuck with whoever is rostered.

Outcome 2: Depth and replaceable players (backups, handcuffs, similar players at the same position) are worth more in best ball, because the automated lineup optimizer maximizes weekly from whoever is healthy — and depth compounds over 18+ weeks.


Position-by-Position Adjustments

Running Back

The highest injury-risk position by far. Running backs take direct hits on most plays and miss significant game time at the highest rate of any skill position.

  • Don’t over-concentrate at RB early. If you take two RBs in your first three picks, an injury to either significantly hurts lineup options.
  • Your RB depth should be higher in best ball than in redraft. In redraft, 4 RBs is typical. In best ball, 5–6 is more common — you need volume-capable backups and pass-catching specialists to cover different injury scenarios.
  • Handcuffs matter more in best ball than redraft. Owning the backup costs a roster spot — but guarantees that if the starter is injured, the production stays in your lineup.

Wide Receiver

Lower injury frequency than RB, but WRs accumulate injury exposure over a long season and soft-tissue injuries can end seasons.

  • WR-heavy strategies (WR in Rounds 1–5, RBs later) are inherently less injury-sensitive than RB-heavy strategies.
  • Avoid receivers with a history of recurring hamstring injuries. These recur and often lead to weeks of limited snap counts rather than clean returns.

Quarterback

QB injuries are expensive because most managers only draft 2 QBs. A QB1 who goes down in Week 3 leaves you relying on a backup for the rest of the season.

  • Two genuine QBs minimum. In long-format contests (Underdog Best Ball running to January), losing a QB for 4–6 weeks can eliminate you from the money regardless of the rest of your roster.
  • Don’t draft two QBs from the same team — your backup should be a genuinely independent source of production.

Tight End

TE injuries are costly because the position is the shallowest in best ball. Streaming TEs doesn’t exist — whatever TEs you drafted are your TEs for the season.

  • Draft your second TE early enough that he can genuinely contribute if your first TE is injured.
  • Don’t treat TE2 as a flyer. In best ball, a sleeper TE2 who contributes 0 points is a dead spot in your lineup when your TE1 misses time.

Depth Architecture for Injury Resilience

A best ball roster built to withstand injuries:

  • QB1 (starting-caliber, ideally with upside)
  • QB2 (genuinely independent from your QB1 — different team)
  • RB1, RB2 (primary RBs with weekly upside)
  • RB3, RB4 (handcuffs or pass-catching specialists who contribute even healthy)
  • RB5 (deep handcuff or volume-upside backup)
  • WR1, WR2, WR3 (your primary WRs)
  • WR4, WR5, WR6 (depth WRs who can flex into starting lineup)
  • WR7+ (sleepers with breakout upside)
  • TE1 (starting-caliber)
  • TE2 (genuine second option — not a $1 bin flyer)

The optimizer maximizes from this pool every week. The more players with legitimate weekly production potential, the more the optimizer can work with — regardless of injuries.


Draft Position Adjustment

Late picks (9–12): Injury risk should make you more interested in WR-heavy strategies. WRs have lower acute injury rates, and their ADP makes them accessible late. The cost of a late-pick RB-heavy strategy is high if either RB gets hurt.

Early picks (1–3): You’re likely taking a top RB or WR. Build redundancy in Rounds 3–4 — if you take a high-volume RB at 1.01, your next RB pick should come early enough that you have a real backup, not a hope.
