Best-Ball Stack Sizing: How Many Players From One Offense?

Best-ball stacking has a sweet spot.

2–3 players from one offense = good correlation, acceptable risk. 1 player = no stack benefit. 5+ players = over-concentration (if offense is bad, many busts).


The Stack Sizes

1 player (no stack):

  • Just one elite guy from Chiefs
  • Example: Mahomes only
  • Correlation: None (you need at least 2 for correlation)

2 players (minimal stack):

  • QB + WR (Mahomes + Travis Kelce)
  • QB + TE (Mahomes + Hollywood Brown)
  • Correlation: High (same game, both boom)
  • Risk: Two players only (not over-concentrated)

3 players (ideal stack):

  • QB + WR + TE (Mahomes + Kelce + one more)
  • Correlation: Very high (multiple ceiling games)
  • Risk: Acceptable (if Chiefs are shut out, three busts, but you have 12 other players)

4 players (advanced stack):

  • QB + WR1 + WR2 + TE (if all available)
  • Correlation: Maximum (entire offense)
  • Risk: Higher (four players dependent on one offense)
  • Timing: Only viable if all four fall to you (rare)

5+ players (over-concentrated):

  • Too much correlation
  • Risk: High (entire offense is one bad week)
  • Avoid: Only draft this many if you love the offense AND they’re value picks

The Correlation Math

2-player stack (Mahomes + Kelce, week 7 boom scenario):

  • Mahomes: 35 points
  • Kelce: 22 points
  • Combined: 57 points (no correlation loss, both benefiting from same high-scoring game)

3-player stack (Mahomes + Kelce + WR):

  • Mahomes: 35 points
  • Kelce: 22 points
  • WR: 18 points
  • Combined: 75 points (all three benefit from same high-scoring game)

5-player stack (Mahomes + Kelce + 3 WRs):

  • Mahomes: 35 points
  • Kelce: 22 points
  • WR1: 18 points
  • WR2: 12 points (fewer targets available, less ceiling)
  • WR3: 8 points (backup, low ceiling)
  • Combined: 95 points? No, realistic = 75 points (target distribution limits upside)

The Target Distribution Problem

An offense scores 50 points in a blowout. That’s split among:

  • QB: 25 points (passing volume)
  • RB: 12 points (rushing + receiving)
  • TE: 10 points (receiving)
  • WR1: 18 points (receiving)
  • WR2: 10 points (fewer targets)
  • WR3: 5 points (backup, minimal targets)

If you own QB + WR1 + WR2 + WR3, you get 25 + 18 + 10 + 5 = 58 points from that offense.

If you own QB + WR1 + TE (better diversification), you get 25 + 18 + 10 = 53 points (less total, but fewer overlapping targets).


The Ideal Stack

2–3 players per offense, 3–4 offenses in your roster:

  • Chiefs stack: Mahomes + Kelce (2)
  • Vikings stack: Jefferson + Cook (2)
  • 49ers stack: Brock Purdy + Brandon Aiyuk (2)
  • Standalone: 9 players from 6+ other offenses

Result: Correlation in your top studs, diversification in your depth.


The Worked Example

Bad stack sizing:

  • Mahomes (QB, Chiefs)
  • Kelce (TE, Chiefs)
  • Hollywood Brown (WR, Chiefs)
  • Mecole Hardman (WR, Chiefs)
  • Patrick Mahomes backup (bench)

That’s 5 Chiefs players. One bad week for Kansas City, you have 5 busts (unlikely, but concentrated risk).

Good stack sizing:

  • Mahomes (QB, Chiefs)
  • Kelce (TE, Chiefs)
  • Jefferson (WR, Vikings)
  • Cook (RB, Vikings)
  • 11 other players from 8+ different offenses

Two stacks, depth in other offenses, correlation bonus when Chiefs/Vikings boom, diversification otherwise.


The Payoff

Stack sizing in best-ball:

  • 2–3 players per offense = good correlation without over-concentration
  • Multiple mini-stacks = boom weeks across the season
  • Depth in other offenses = safety net if one offense is bad
