Late QB Strategy in Best Ball: When to Wait and How to Pick Two
In head-to-head fantasy, a top-3 quarterback is worth a premium early pick because he will outscore the field by 5–8 points per game over a full season. That consistent production matters every week when you are trying to win matchups. In best ball, the weekly advantage does not compound the same way — you need peak weeks, not average weeks.

Why You Can Wait on QB in Best Ball
Positional scarcity is lower at QB. In a 12-team best ball league, 12 QBs will be drafted as primary starters. With 32 NFL teams and most starting QBs being serviceable fantasy contributors, the 13th or 14th best QB in best ball still has legitimate tournament upside. The gap between QB1 and QB12 is smaller than the gap between WR1 and WR12.
QB scoring variance is more compressed than WR. QBs score more consistently because they are involved in nearly every offensive play. An elite QB’s floor is 20+ points most weeks; his ceiling might be 50. A WR’s floor can be 2 points and ceiling can be 50. In best ball, you want the ceiling — and WR ceiling is more extreme than QB ceiling.
Stack value substitutes for early QB selection. When you draft a QB and his WR in the same roster, you create correlated upside. But you can create this same correlated upside by taking a mid-tier QB in rounds 7–9 and stacking him with a WR1 and WR2 from his offense.
When to Draft Your QB
Rounds 7–10 for QB1 (best ball consensus). This range gives you three to five rounds of WR/RB priority before addressing QB. Most experienced best ball drafters hit this window.
Rounds 4–6 (justified exception). If an elite QB falls significantly below ADP — Josh Allen falling to Round 5 when he was projected Round 2 — taking him at that value is correct.
Rounds 10–12 (deeper WR approach). Only correct in very deep WR leagues where you are building maximum WR depth and are comfortable with two mid-tier QBs rather than one premium QB.
Drafting Two QBs
Best ball rosters typically carry 2 QBs because:
- Bye weeks: Your QB1 has a bye week — you need coverage
- Injury depth: QBs get injured — one-QB rosters have zero backup
- Tournament ceiling: Two QB stacks means two correlated upside events that can generate your best weeks
The two-stack approach: Some managers deliberately draft two QB-WR stacks from different offenses. Each stack creates correlated upside events independently — when one offense has a big game, those players all score; when the other offense has a big game, those players all score. Two separate ceiling-generating events across the season.
The risk: if both QBs underperform, you are weak at the position. The reward: two independent events that can generate your tournament-winning weeks.
Monitoring QB Runs
QBs often go in clusters in best ball drafts — multiple QBs taken in 3–5 consecutive picks as managers react to others taking them. When a QB run starts in rounds 5–7, decide: join the run and take a QB now, or let the run happen and take a QB in rounds 10–12 when the panic subsides.
Best target: A QB you are already stacked with. If you have two WRs from the same offense on your roster, taking their QB in a later round creates a full correlated unit at minimal draft cost.
