Best Ball Target Share Shifts: How to Identify and Draft Into Opportunity Changes

Best ball rosters are locked after the draft. The opportunity that develops during the season belongs to whoever you drafted to capture it. Target share shifts — when targets redistribute within an offense — are the mechanism that creates the biggest value gaps between rosters that looked similar on draft day.

Why Target Share Shifts Matter More in Best Ball

In standard fantasy, you pick up the player who absorbed a WR1’s targets off the waiver wire. In best ball, you cannot. The value of target share shifts goes entirely to whoever drafted the likely beneficiary before the draft.

The best ball managers who consistently advance in tournaments draft rosters designed to absorb target share shifts when they happen. This means:

  • Drafting multiple receivers from the same team
  • Targeting second and third receivers whose opportunity expands when the WR1 is absent
  • Identifying offenses where target redistribution within the roster is predictable

Types of Target Share Shifts

WR1 injury. The most common shift. When a team’s primary receiver goes on injured reserve, his 25–30% target share redistributes among the remaining receivers. A WR2 absorbing a WR1 role can go from 14–16 fantasy points per game to 22–26 points — often for multiple weeks.

Best ball draft implication: Draft the WR2 on any team where the WR1 is injury-prone. The WR2 has two paths to value — his normal production, and the expanded role when the WR1 misses games.

Training camp and preseason role emergence. Sometimes a player develops a larger role than projected. A third receiver who looks like a depth piece in April becomes a featured weapon by September. Drafting WR3s on high-volume passing teams gives you exposure to role emergence that cannot be predicted but can develop.

Quarterback changes. When a quarterback switches in-season — through injury, performance, or coaching decision — the target distribution across the receiving corps can shift. Receivers who fit the backup QB’s preferences absorb more targets. Draft teams with interesting backup QB situations to capture this upside.

Breakout role development. Younger receivers who were backups in prior seasons can develop into full starters by the second half of the season. A WR who was a depth piece in Week 1 emerges as the clear WR2 by Week 9. Draft 2nd-year receivers on high-volume offenses whose role may expand as the season progresses.


How to Draft for Target Share Shift Upside

Layer the depth chart. When you draft a team’s WR1, add the WR2 from the same offense somewhere later in the draft. If the WR1 gets hurt, your WR2 captures the target share shift. If neither gets hurt, both produce their normal role — still a value outcome.

Target injury-prone offenses. Some offenses historically have had multiple receivers on IR by Week 8. Depth drafts in injury-prone offenses are educated bets that someone on that roster will absorb opportunity.

Late-round WR3 targets. In Rounds 14–18, targeting WR3s on the top-5 passing offenses costs almost nothing in draft capital but provides exposure to significant upside if anyone ahead of them gets hurt or underperforms.


What to Avoid

Drafting the wrong shift recipient. The player who absorbs a WR1’s target share when he goes on IR is usually the WR2 — a legitimate player already receiving meaningful targets. Not the WR4 who was a practice squad depth piece. Identify who the realistic shift recipient is on each team.

Overdrafting based on shift potential. Target share shift value is real but speculative. Do not pay a WR2 price for a WR3 purely based on shift upside. The shift potential should move them up a few picks, not multiple rounds.
