Best Ball QB Strategy: When to Draft Two QBs and How to Build the Paired Stack
Quarterbacks are the highest-scoring position in best ball formats. A QB who throws 40 touchdowns scores roughly 300–350 points in PPR scoring — more than any RB or WR in a typical season. Getting the QB position right is critical.

The Two Approaches
Approach 1: Elite QB early + backup late. Draft one of the top 4–6 QBs in rounds 5–8 and add a backup QB in rounds 14–17. Your strategy is anchored to the elite QB’s production — the backup is insurance.
Approach 2: Two mid-range QBs with stacks. Skip the top QB tier entirely and take two QBs in rounds 10–13, pairing each with receivers from their offense. You sacrifice the guaranteed floor of an elite QB but preserve early picks for skill positions and generate correlated ceiling through two independent QB stacks.
When to Use Approach 1
Best for: Drafters picking early (picks 1–3), who can secure an elite QB without sacrificing WR/RB depth; drafters who believe one specific QB is significantly undervalued relative to their ADP; leagues where an elite QB has fallen below consensus value.
Trade-offs: An elite QB anchors your floor — even if your WRs have a bad week, the QB is likely scoring 25+. But you are spending 5–8 rounds of equity on a position you start once, which limits WR depth.
When to Use Approach 2
Best for: Drafters picking in the middle-to-late draft range (picks 5–10), who find elite QBs already gone; drafters who want to concentrate draft capital in WR/RB depth; large-field tournaments where taking two mid-range QBs creates ownership differentiation.
Trade-offs: Correlated upside — when one of your QB stacks goes off, multiple players on your roster benefit. But your floor is lower: a week where both QBs are bad leaves your team scoring below average at the most important position.
Building the QB Stack in Best Ball
Primary stack (QB + WR1). Your primary QB should be paired with at least one wide receiver from his offense. When the QB has a 350-yard, 4-TD game, his WR1 likely had 8 catches for 120 yards and a score. This correlation boosts your ceiling in the same week your QB is scoring.
Secondary receiver in the stack. Carrying a second WR from the same offense creates a two-receiver stack with the QB, amplifying the correlated upside. In a big passing game week, two of your WRs and your QB all score well together.
When a single-WR stack is enough. If you want correlation benefit without concentrating too heavily in one offense, pairing a QB with one WR is sufficient and still delivers meaningful upside.
Common QB Mistakes in Best Ball
Drafting a QB too late. Going into Week 6 with both QBs on bye simultaneously, or having your starter injured with no backup, is one of the most damaging situations in best ball. Add a backup by Round 15 at the latest.
Pairing a QB with only his RB. QB-RB stacks create correlation in rushing touchdowns, which are less frequent than passing touchdowns. QB + WR is the most efficient stack structure.
Ignoring offensive line quality. A QB behind a poor offensive line takes more hits, holds the ball longer, and faces higher pressure rates — reducing passing volume, affecting accuracy, and increasing injury risk. Offensive line context matters when evaluating mid-range QBs.
