How to Use Game Totals and Implied Team Scores in Best Ball Draft Decisions
Before every NFL game, sportsbooks set a game total (over/under) and a spread. From these two numbers, you can calculate how many points each team is expected to score. This implied team score tells you which offenses are projected to move the ball and score — information that directly translates to fantasy value.
Game Total Quick Reference for Best Ball
| Total range | What it signals | Fantasy environment | Best-ball action |
|---|---|---|---|
| 52+ | Both teams projected to score heavily; fast-paced or both offenses strong | Highest ceiling for skill players; positive game scripts expected for both teams | Best stacking environment — QB and primary WR from one of these teams is an ideal stack |
| 48–51 | Above-average scoring expected; good passing environment | Reliable floor and ceiling for skill players; red zone trips expected | Draft players from these offenses; use as a tiebreaker between similar players |
| 43–47 | Moderate scoring; average fantasy environment | Most games fall here; not a specific positive or negative signal | No particular adjustment — evaluate player role and target share as primary criteria |
| Under 40 | Low-scoring game; run-first teams or strong defenses on both sides | Fewer passing attempts; skill players face a ceiling cap | Avoid as a differentiating factor; player roles in these offenses must be especially strong to overcome the environment |
How to Calculate Implied Team Scores
The formula:
- Implied favorite score = (Total / 2) + (Spread / 2)
- Implied underdog score = (Total / 2) − (Spread / 2)
Example: Game total 47. Spread: Home team −3.
- Home implied score: (47/2) + (3/2) = 23.5 + 1.5 = 25
- Away implied score: (47/2) − (3/2) = 23.5 − 1.5 = 22
The home team is projected to score 25 points; the away team 22.
Using Season-Long Implied Scores in Draft Prep
Identify high-offense teams before your draft. Rank every NFL team by their projected season scoring output using:
- Sportsbook team win total futures as a proxy
- Analyst team previews that reference expected pass rate
- Projected game totals from the full-season schedule
A WR on a team projected to score 28 points per game has more ceiling than a WR on a team projected to score 20 points per game, even if both have similar target shares. The volume of scoring attempts differs significantly.
Dome teams and warm-weather markets have more consistent offensive production than teams in cold, windy stadiums (Chicago, Buffalo, Cleveland). In best ball, dome team offenses are more reliable weekly contributors.
How to Apply During the Draft
Pre-draft tier adjustment: Within your tier structure, when two WRs are in the same tier, the one in a higher-projected-scoring offense gets the edge. This is a tiebreaker, not a primary selector — target share and role quality always come first.
Playoff schedule alignment: Use projected game totals for Weeks 15–17 (your best ball playoff weeks) to give preference to players with favorable high-scoring environments specifically in those weeks. A WR whose team has two home games against weak defenses in playoff weeks is a better pick than an equivalent WR playing in brutal weather on the road.
Stack identification: High game totals create the best stacking environments. When a game projects for 52+ points, the QB and primary WR from one of those teams is an ideal stack — the game script is likely to feature heavy passing from both sides.
Limitations
Game totals are one input, not a final answer. A player with a poor role in a high-scoring offense is not as valuable as a player with a great role in a moderate-scoring offense. Target share and role quality always come first; game environment is the tiebreaker and amplifier.
Projected totals change. Weather forecasts, injury reports, and line movement affect game totals. Season-level projections are less volatile but still approximate.
