Variance Strategy in Best Ball: How to Use Randomness to Your Advantage
Expected value is the foundation of good decisions in most fantasy formats. The player projected to score the most is, on average, the best pick. In best ball tournaments, this is true — but incomplete. Variance around the expected value is equally important because best ball rewards tails of distributions, not averages.

Why Variance Matters More Than Expected Value Alone
The tournament math: In a large best ball tournament, you do not win by finishing average. You win by finishing in the top 1–5% of all entries. The optimal strategy is not “maximize my expected weekly score” — it is “maximize the probability of having a top-1% weekly score in the right weeks.”
High-variance vs. consistent players:
Suppose you are choosing between two WRs with the same projected 10 points:
- WR A: 4-point standard deviation — range roughly 6–14 most weeks
- WR B: 8-point standard deviation — range roughly 2–18 most weeks
In head-to-head, WR A is preferable — same average, less risk of a bad week. In best ball, WR B is preferable because the weeks where he scores 18+ contribute to your ceiling weeks automatically. The weeks where he scores 2 simply do not make the cut.
The floor matters less in best ball: Your worst individual player’s worst weeks never count. Low floors are not a risk — they are irrelevant. High ceilings are what matters.
Correlated Variance: The Stacking Advantage
Why stacks amplify variance: A QB-WR1 stack creates correlated variance. When the QB has a great week — multiple TDs, high volume — the WR1 also benefits. Both players score highly in the same weeks.
In best ball, the bad weeks when both players underperform simply do not surface as your highest scores. You lose those weeks to your opponents regardless; the stacking did not cost you anything. But when both players hit ceiling simultaneously, you generate a week that separates you from 90%+ of the field.
The bring-back as anti-correlation: A player from the opposing team in your QB’s game. When the QB’s offense struggles, the opponent might score more from a favorable game script. Anti-correlation reduces your best-case scenario (you never have both offenses scoring 40+ simultaneously) but also reduces your worst case (you always have some exposure to the game environment).
Positional Variance
QBs: Scrambling QBs in high-scoring game environments have the highest individual variance — range from 12 to 40+ fantasy points depending on game environment. Hold high-variance QBs (scrambling + high-scoring offense) over consistent-but-capped QBs when projected averages are close.
WRs: Deep-threat WRs are the highest-variance receiver type. Many weeks in the 3–5 point range; occasional 25–35 point explosions. In best ball, the explosion weeks are valuable and the dead weeks cost nothing.
RBs: Committee RBs have the highest week-to-week variance at the position. Bellcow RBs with consistent 15+ point averages are excellent anchors but provide less ceiling upside than a committee back with a higher point ceiling on their best weeks.
Variance in Late Rounds as Tournament Strategy
Low-owned + high-variance = tournament edge. A player at 3% ownership who has a 30-point explosion gives you a significant edge over the field in that week. That is the tournament-winning formula.
When your late-round picks match the field, your tournament entry is indistinguishable from average. You win when your late-round picks outperform their ADP. High-variance late-round picks have more opportunity to do exactly that — their ceiling can far exceed the conservative expectations reflected in their late draft position.
