Best Ball Weekly Scoring Patterns: Stacks, Ceiling Weeks, and What Actually Wins
Best ball’s automatic lineup feature means the platform starts your best players — but understanding which scoring patterns produce the big ceiling weeks that win tournaments is what separates systematic winners from lucky ones.
The two most important patterns: stacked players who produce together, and bench explosions from depth picks. Here’s how both work and what the specific numbers look like.
What a Ceiling Week Requires
In Underdog’s standard best ball format, average weekly scores run 120–145 points. A typical winner in a 12-team tournament scores around 160–175+ per week in the fantasy playoffs. That gap — from 140-point average to 175-point ceiling week — comes from specific scoring events.
The three ingredients:
1. Stack correlation fire: Your QB and one or more of his pass catchers produce simultaneously. A QB with 350 passing yards and 3 TDs generates 30+ points. His WR who catches 8 for 120 yards and a TD generates 25+ more. Those correlated productions don’t add to your team’s output separately — they amplify each other because the score from one creates the score for the other.
2. Bench explosion: One of your depth picks — the WR4 who scores 3 points most weeks — has their 28-point game. Because best ball starts the optimal lineup, this 28-point explosion replaces your weakest WR performance automatically.
3. No catastrophic zeros: Your RB1 doesn’t score 3 points. Your quarterback doesn’t have a zero-TD, 180-yard clunker. Ceiling weeks require the big players to perform at least adequately.
Stack Correlation: The Math Behind Ceiling Weeks
When a quarterback has a big game, two things happen simultaneously:
- The QB generates his own large point total
- His passing targets also generate large point totals
This is correlated variance — they rise together, fall together.
Specific scoring scenario:
Patrick Mahomes game: 350 passing yards + 4 TDs = 14 (yards) + 24 (TDs) = 38 points Travis Kelce game from the same game: 9 catches, 110 yards, 2 TDs = 9 (PPR) + 11 (yards) + 12 (TDs) = 32 points
Those two players together: 70 points — before your RBs, other WRs, or any bench player has scored.
Without the stack: Mahomes gets his 38 points. But the WR who caught 2 of his TDs was on another team. Your WR position players scored 11 and 9 because they weren’t in the Mahomes game stack. Your total is the same QB points + mediocre pass catcher points instead of correlated WR points.
The delta is roughly 15–25 additional points in ceiling weeks — which converts a 145-point average week into a 165+ ceiling week.
Stack Correlation by Format
Full PPR leagues amplify stack correlation. Every reception bonus for your stacked WR/TE is added value that non-PPR formats miss.

The bring-back: In multi-player stacks, adding a player from the opposing defense’s offense can capture variance from both directions. When Team A scores 35 on Team B, someone on Team B likely scored too — a “bring-back” from Team B captures part of that upside.
Bench Explosion Patterns: Why Depth Wins Best Ball
In standard fantasy, your bench player only scores if you manually start him. In best ball, your bench scores whenever any player out-performs a starter in the optimal lineup calculation.
The weekly math: Assume your starting WR2 and WR3 score 16 and 12 points (solid weeks). Your WR5 on the bench normally scores 4. But this week he has 28 points on a 2-TD afternoon.
The platform automatically replaces your worst WR score (12) with the best bench score (28). Your WR group improves by 16 points from a player you didn’t think about or need to evaluate.
How bench explosion frequency affects tournament outcomes:
Over a 17-week season, every player on your roster who has a minimum of one “explosion game” (25+ point week) contributes to your ceiling. The more players with ceiling potential, the more weeks where bench explosions fire.
Targeting explosion potential in depth picks:
- WR depth who is the second receiver in a high-volume passing offense (target share available)
- RBs who are handcuffs to an injury-prone feature back (workload upside)
- TEs in pass-heavy offenses who catch 40–50 balls — they have TD upside on a low baseline
Position Explosion Patterns by Week
QB: Score 30+ in about 15% of starts (4+ TD games). These week score QB + correlated pass catchers together. The key is having a QB capable of a 4-TD week — not just consistent 1–2 TD production.
RB: Score 25+ primarily through two paths:
- TD accumulation (2+ TDs on any yardage total)
- Volume + efficiency (130+ rushing yards even without TDs)
Best ball implication: Feature backs with goalline role are more valuable than efficient RBs without TD upside. TDs drive RB ceiling weeks; efficiency alone rarely produces 25+ point weeks at the level that wins tournaments.
WR: Score 25+ through:
- 8+ targets + 1 TD (volume game that hits)
- 120+ receiving yards on 7+ catches (pure volume, PPR)
- 40+ yard explosive play + additional production
In full PPR, the 8-catch/90-yard/1-TD game reaches 25+ more reliably than in half-PPR. Slot WRs with high catch rates fire ceiling weeks more often in full PPR formats.
TE: Score 20+ primarily through:
- 6+ catches + 1 TD (high reception volume + TD)
- Rare: 2+ TDs in goalline/red zone role
In TE premium formats, any game with 6+ catches for a premium TE contributes 15+ to the optimal lineup just from receptions — making TD upside more valuable since it’s on top of an already-elevated baseline.
The Zero Week: Managing Catastrophic Weeks
Every roster has weeks where a key player scores 0–4 points. Zero weeks from your top players are the most damaging — they pull down your optimal lineup because even your bench replacements have a ceiling.
Two structural protections:
Position redundancy: Having 4 RBs means one zero doesn’t eliminate your RB depth. Your RB4 replaces the RB1 who scored 2 points — but only if your RB4 scored more than 2 points that week.
Roster depth overall: A team with 7 WRs generates replacement options for zero weeks at WR. A team with 5 WRs has fewer options, meaning a zero WR week costs more points in the optimal lineup.
The depth-week math: A team with functional depth who has a zero week from their WR1 scores 110–120 in that week. A team with no depth scores 85–95. Over 17 weeks, those 4–6 extra “depth week” contributions are worth 100–150 points — the seasonal difference between making the tournament finals or not.
Building for Ceiling vs. Floor
In a 12-team best ball tournament where one team wins, the winner typically has the highest ceiling week in the final round — not the highest average all season.
The counterintuitive implication: Consistent players who produce 14–16 points reliably every week have limited best ball value. They never lose you a week, but they rarely win your optimal lineup either. The player who scores 4, 3, 28, 5, 2, 31 contributes the same two ceiling-week values as a player who scores 15 every week — but the consistent player costs significantly more in ADP.
Build for ceiling: Accept the variance. Stack when possible. Target bench depth with explosion potential rather than consistent floors. Let the automatic lineup feature handle the downside risk.
