How to Win Weeks in Best Ball: The Mechanics of Weekly Score Optimization

In best ball, you’re trying to post the highest cumulative score over a full season. To do that, you need to win weeks — or at least post enough high-scoring weeks to accumulate more total points than the competition. Understanding how a weekly score gets constructed is the foundation of best ball roster strategy.

How Your Weekly Score Is Built

Your best ball lineup automatically selects the optimal combination of your roster’s scores each week. For a typical best ball roster with 1 QB, 2 RBs, 3 WRs, 1 TE, and 1 FLEX:

The platform looks at all your players and arranges them to maximize your total. If your 4th WR outscored your 2 RBs this week, he takes the FLEX slot. If your backup QB scored more than your starter, he starts.

The implication: Your weekly score is determined by your best N players at each position, not who you expected to start before the week.


What Actually Drives High-Scoring Weeks

Multiple explosions on the same week: A week where your QB throws for 350 yards and 4 TDs, your WR1 catches 10 for 130 and a score, and your backup WR hits a big game is a week where you post 180+ points. Single great performances are worth 35–40 points; a week with three 30+ point players is worth 110+ points.

What a top-5% weekly score looks like:

  • QB: 35–45 points (300+ yards, 3–4 TDs, or significant rushing)
  • 2 RBs: 25–35 points combined
  • 3 WRs: 65–80 points combined (1 elite game, 1 solid, 1 average)
  • 1 TE: 15–25 points
  • 1 FLEX: 25–35 points
  • Total: ~165–215 points — 3–4 players had excellent games simultaneously

What a losing week looks like: Most starters hit average-to-below-average; no ceiling performances; FLEX is a mediocre RB at 7 points. Total: 80–100 points.


Practical Drafting Implications

Draft for ceiling, not consistency: Floor players contribute moderate points in most weeks but rarely produce the 35–40 point explosions that make a week exceptional. Target players with boom-game potential.

Stack where the value exists: If a top QB is falling in your draft, take him and intentionally take one of his WRs in a later round. This creates correlated upside at a reasonable combined cost.

6 WRs, not 5: The 6th WR has asymmetric value — he’s cheap (late rounds), contributes ceiling weeks when he hits, and costs nothing when he doesn’t. The additional WR slot dramatically increases your chances of having a high-scoring receiver hit the lineup.
