Every player is three numbers, not one: floor (worst-case), consistency (average), and ceiling (best-case). Projecting all three — instead of a single average — tells you what kind of player you have, and which format and roster slot he actually fits.

Every player has three dimensions: floor (worst-case), consistency (average), ceiling (best-case). Understanding all three predicts outcomes.
Floor: Minimum points likely in a game (injury, bad matchup, depressed opportunity). Consistency: Average points across season. Ceiling: Maximum points possible (perfect game, elite matchup, game script favorable).
Floor Analysis
Player floor = what happens on their worst day.
Calculation:
- Identify player’s worst 5 performances last season
- Average those performances
- That’s the floor
Example WR:
- 5 worst games: 4, 6, 3, 5, 7 points
- Average: 5 points
- Floor: 5 points
Players with high floors are safe (consistent playing time, role stability). Players with low floors are risky (inconsistent opportunity, injury risk).
Consistency Analysis
Consistency = expected average outcome across season.
Calculation:
- Project total season production (opportunity × efficiency)
- Divide by games played
- That’s weekly consistency
Example RB:
- 1400 rushing yards, 50 receptions = 1650 total yards
- 1650 yards ÷ 17 games = 97 yards per game
- 6 TDs = 0.35 TDs per game
- PPR: 97/10 yards + 50/17 receptions + 6 TDs = 9.7 PPR per game = consistency
Ceiling Analysis
Ceiling = best-case scenario in a game.
Calculation:
- Identify player’s best 5 performances last season
- Average those performances
- That’s the ceiling
Example WR:
- 5 best games: 28, 35, 22, 30, 26 points
- Average: 28 points
- Ceiling: 28 points
High-ceiling players create fantasy wins (ceiling weeks decide championships). Low-ceiling players are safe but limited upside.
Three-Dimensional Player Typing
Using Floor-Consistency-Ceiling:
Type 1 - High Floor, High Consistency, High Ceiling (Elite): Mahomes, Travis Kelce. Premium assets.
Type 2 - High Floor, High Consistency, Low Ceiling (Consistency): Established veterans. Reliable but limited upside.
Type 3 - Low Floor, Moderate Consistency, High Ceiling (Boom/Bust): Breakout players. Explosive potential, risky.
Type 4 - Low Floor, Low Consistency, Low Ceiling (Avoid): Bench players. Don’t draft.
Projection Framework
Combining the three dimensions:
Pre-Draft Projection:
- Floor: 8 PPR per game (safe floor based on role)
- Consistency: 12 PPR per game (average season outcome)
- Ceiling: 25 PPR per game (best-case week)
This three-dimensional profile predicts outcomes better than single projections.
Worked Example: Same 12-Point Average, Opposite Players
Two receivers both average 12 PPR per game — identical on a projection sheet that shows only the mean. A manager treats them as the same asset. But split the average into its three dimensions. Receiver A scored 10, 13, 11, 14, 12 — a tight cluster: high floor, low ceiling, a “consistency” profile. Receiver B scored 3, 28, 4, 25, 0 — same 12-point average, but a low floor and a huge ceiling: a “boom/bust” profile.
They belong in completely different formats. In a managed head-to-head lineup where you start him every week, Receiver A is far safer — his 12 is dependable, while Receiver B might hand you a zero in a must-win week. But in best ball, where only your best scores count, Receiver B is the more valuable player: his 28- and 25-point spikes get counted and his zeros get silently dropped, exactly what wins tournaments. The identical average hid the only thing that mattered — the shape of the distribution. Project floor and ceiling, not just the mean, and you’ll slot each player where his variance actually helps you.
Common mistake: ranking and starting players by a single projected average, which erases the difference between a steady 12-point floor player and a boom/bust player who averages 12 on wild swings. The mean is the same; the right use is opposite — the consistency profile is safer in managed weekly lineups, the high-variance profile is worth more in best ball and tournaments where only your best scores count.
