Fantasy Football Redzone Efficiency: How to Use Redzone Targets and Carries in Fantasy Football
Why redzone metrics are separate from overall production metrics: a player’s overall target share tells you how much the offense uses them in general play. Their redzone target share tells you something different — how much the offense trusts them when scoring is the explicit goal. These two measures are often misaligned. A WR who gets 18% of overall targets but only 8% of redzone targets has low touchdown upside relative to their volume. A TE who gets 12% of overall targets but 25% of redzone targets has high touchdown potential that his overall numbers understate. Understanding this distinction is the key to predicting which players will over- or under-produce TDs relative to their volume.

How to Use Redzone Data in Fantasy Decisions
Redzone data in start/sit decisions. Applying redzone metrics weekly: (1) a player who has accumulated 6+ redzone targets over 3 weeks without a TD is statistically overdue — start them confidently as TD regression is likely; (2) a player who scored 3 TDs in 2 weeks on only 4 total redzone targets should be sold or benched — the TD rate is unsustainably high relative to their volume; (3) a player’s redzone target share within a specific drive type (red zone formation tendencies) can tell you whether their matchup this week is favorable — a team that defends redzone TEs poorly facing a TE with a strong redzone role is a favorable setup.
Redzone data in draft decisions. Using redzone metrics before the season: (1) identify which players received the highest redzone target share from the prior season — players with 20%+ redzone target share are elite TD candidates regardless of their overall target share; (2) identify which players had fewer TDs than their redzone volume suggested — they are likely to regress upward in the current season; (3) identify which players had more TDs than their volume supported — they are likely to regress downward; and (4) use redzone carries per game for RBs — an RB who averages 4+ redzone carries per game is more valuable in TD-weighted scoring (non-PPR) than their overall carry number suggests.

Pull redzone targets alongside total targets for any player you are considering — the ratio between them is more informative than either number alone.
