Value Tiers Framework: Group, Don't Rank

Ranking all 300 fantasy players is impossible.

“Is Player 47 better than Player 48?” You’ll never know with certainty.

Instead, successful managers group players into tiers. A tier is a cluster of players with similar expected value. This simplifies decision-making and surfaces scarcity.


The Principle

Traditional ranking: Rank all 300 in order. “Player 47 is the 47th-best.”

Tier-based grouping: Group into tiers. “Player 47 is in Tier-2 RB (very good).”

Tiers are easier to build, more reliable, and more useful for drafting.


Building Tiers

Step 1: Identify Elite Tiers

At each position, identify the truly elite players (top 1–3).

Elite RB Tier: Barkley, Henry, Gibbs (140+ points each)

Elite WR Tier: Jefferson, Chase, (Kelce if you count TE) (140+ points each)

Elite TE Tier: Kelce, Waller (150+ and 120+ points respectively)


Step 2: Identify Value Tiers (Where Gaps Emerge)

Below elite, group into tiers based on expected points and scarcity.

RB Tiers:

  • Tier-1 (Elite): 2–3 guys, 140+ points | Example: Barkley, Henry
  • Tier-2 (Very Good): 5–7 guys, 110–140 points | Example: Aaron Jones, Josh Jacobs
  • Tier-3 (Good): 8–12 guys, 80–110 points | Example: Kareem Hunt, Rhamondre Stevenson
  • Tier-4 (Okay): 13–20 guys, 60–80 points | Example: Various committee backs
  • Tier-5 (Lottery): 20+ guys, 40–60 points | Example: Young unproven guys, aging vets

WR Tiers:

  • Tier-1 (Elite): 2–3 guys, 140+ points
  • Tier-2 (Very Good): 5–8 guys, 110–140 points
  • Tier-3 (Good): 10–15 guys, 85–110 points
  • Tier-4 (Okay): 15–25 guys, 70–85 points
  • Tier-5 (Lottery): 25+ guys, 50–70 points

TE Tiers:

  • Tier-1 (Elite): 1 guy (Kelce), 150+ points
  • Tier-2 (Very Good): 2–3 guys, 110–130 points
  • Tier-3 (Good): 4–6 guys, 80–110 points
  • Tier-4 (Okay): 7–10 guys, 60–80 points
  • Tier-5 (Lottery): 10+ guys, 40–60 points

Step 3: Position Tiers Relative to Each Other

This is the key question: Which WR tier compares to which RB tier?

Example: If you think WR Tier-2 (110–140 points) is similar to RB Tier-2 (110–140 points), then they’re equally valuable.

If RB Tier-1 is 140+ points and WR Tier-1 is 140+ points, they’re equivalent.


Tier-Based Drafting

Traditional approach:

  • “I need a RB. Let me pick the best available RB.” → You reach
  • “He’s not a Tier-1 RB, but he’s the next best” → You overpay for a Tier-3

Tier-based approach:

  • “Is the next available RB still in the same tier I expected?”
  • “If yes (Tier-2 available): take him. Scarcity matters.”
  • “If no (only Tier-3 available): take a WR instead. Better value.”

The Worked Example

Situation: Round 3, pick 18 (out of 12 teams)

Available:

  • RB Tier-2 (110–140 points): One guy left
  • WR Tier-2 (110–140 points): Three guys left
  • WR Tier-3 (85–110 points): Many guys left

Analysis:

  • RB Tier-2 is running out (only 1 left vs. 3 WRs)
  • RB Tier-3 is still deep
  • Next round, RB Tier-3 will be available, but RB Tier-2 might not

Decision: Take the RB Tier-2. Scarcity (only 1 left) justifies the pick.


The Tier Gap Decision

When do you take a guy from a lower tier?

Answer: When the tier gap is large AND the next tier is still available later.

Example:

  • RB Tier-2: 110–140 points (running out, only 2 left)
  • RB Tier-3: 80–110 points (deep, 10 left)
  • Gap: 30 points

You might take RB Tier-2 despite it “not being your turn” because Tier-3 will still be there next round.


The Payoff

Tier-based drafting:

  • Simplifies decisions: “Is this tier gap worth it?” is easier than “Is Player 47 better than Player 48?”
  • Surfaces scarcity: You immediately see when a tier is running out
  • Prevents reaches: You stay within rational tiers; you don’t reach for “your guy”
  • Makes drafts consistent: You follow a logic, not hunches
