ADP Value in Best Ball: How to Find and Exploit Market Inefficiencies
Average Draft Position (ADP) is the market price. Like any market, it’s often close to correct — and systematically wrong in predictable ways. The draft advantages in best ball come from understanding where the consensus is biased and how to exploit those gaps.

Understanding ADP
What it measures: ADP aggregates thousands of real draft picks and computes the average pick position for each player. If a player’s ADP is 24, someone takes them with the 24th overall pick on average.
Best ball-specific ADP: Use platform-specific ADP for best ball — Underdog ADP for Underdog drafts, FantasyPros consensus for mixed platforms. General ADP from casual leagues skews certain players higher or lower than best ball markets would price them. Format-specific market data is more accurate than aggregated mixed-format data.
Why Markets Are Systematically Biased
Recency bias: Players who had a big game recently are drafted at higher ADPs. In preseason best ball drafts, early preseason flashers go too early. Early preseason performance is a weak predictor of regular season production.
Round anchor effect: Drafters mentally organize picks by round (“I want a WR in Rounds 3–4”). This anchoring causes good players near the end of Round 3 to fall (people save for Round 4) while mediocre players at the start of Round 4 go early. The round break is a bias, not a real tier boundary.
Narrative inflation: Players with compelling stories (“new OC, breakout coming”) get drafted on the narrative instead of the numbers. When the story doesn’t have statistical support, it creates a buying opportunity for less glamorous players.
ADP as Tier Boundaries
The best practical use of ADP in a live draft: tier identification, not pick-by-pick obsession.
How to use it:
- A group of players with ADP ranging from 28–35 is a tier — the specific order within that range matters less than knowing when the tier ends
- Take anyone in your target tier without worrying about the exact ordering within it
- Focus attention on not drafting tier-3 players at tier-2 prices
Tier break discipline: The biggest ADP inefficiency is drafting across tier breaks — paying tier-2 price for a tier-3 player because you “wanted to stay at the position.” Recognize when a tier ends and pivot to a different position rather than reaching down to a worse player in the same position.
Positional run exploitation: When a run on QBs in Rounds 5–7 forces managers to take QBs out of order, the managers who waited often get QBs in Rounds 10–12 at a meaningful ADP discount. The run itself is the inefficiency — don’t panic into paying inflated prices during a run.
