Best Ball ADP Arbitrage: How to Find and Exploit Market Inefficiencies

ADP (Average Draft Position) represents the market’s consensus on where a player should be drafted. When the market is wrong — when players are consistently drafted too early or too late relative to their actual projected output — there’s an edge to exploit.

Why ADP Inefficiencies Exist

Recency bias: Markets overweight recent performance. A player who had a great year last season is drafted higher than fundamentals project. A player who had an injury year is drafted lower than their situation justifies. Both create systematic edges.

Name recognition: Casual drafters — who make up a significant portion of best ball fields — draft on reputation. Veterans with established names are often drafted above their projected output. Younger, less-known players are often underdrafted despite better situations.

Opportunity underestimation: When a player moves to a new team or steps into a new role, the market is slow to fully price in the new opportunity. Especially in preseason when best ball drafts occur, new-role players are frequently available well below their projected opportunity.

Situation complexity: Some player situations require research to understand fully. Casual drafters don’t dig into depth charts or target share projections. Players with valuable situations that require research are systematically undervalued in public fields.


How to Find ADP Arbitrage

Step 1: Build your projections. Before drafting, pull a set of projected values — from a trusted tool, a fantasy analyst you trust, or your own assessment. You need a view of expected production by player independent of ADP.

Step 2: Compare to current ADP. Pull the ADP from your drafting platform or an aggregated ADP tool. For each player: projected rank minus ADP. Large positive gap (projected 35th, ADP 60th) = potential buy. Large negative gap (projected 75th, ADP 50th) = potential avoid.

Step 3: Filter for legitimate arbitrage. Not every gap is real. Before trusting a gap:

  • Is your projection based on updated information (new role, injury recovery, depth chart change)?
  • Is the ADP based on outdated information (last year’s injury, the old depth chart)?
  • Is there a legitimate reason the market is discounting this player (age, chronic injury, real uncertainty)?

The best arbitrage plays have a specific, articulable reason why the market is mispriced.


Applying Arbitrage in a Live Draft

Don’t anchor to ADP in your queue: Your target players should be defined by your projected value, not their ADP. If you’ve identified Player A as a buy, don’t wait for his ADP — he may be gone if someone else sees the same value.

Know your floor price: For each arbitrage target, know the round where you’d be paying fair value. If Player A is worth a Round 7 pick and is available at Round 8, take him. If he’s still available at Round 12, evaluate whether your projection is wrong or the market is.

Have multiple targets: You won’t get every arbitrage target. Have backup arbitrage candidates at each position tier — when one is gone, pivot to the next identified player.

Don’t force the draft around arbitrage: If you’ve found great WR value in Rounds 3–5 but your roster needs RBs, don’t ignore the need. ADP arbitrage is about finding value — not forcing a pre-planned construction that ignores roster balance.


Tracking Your Arbitrage Edge

Post-season review: After the season, evaluate how your arbitrage plays performed. Which systematically worked? Which didn’t? This builds a compounding edge year over year.

Understand the “why” when you’re right: When you identify an arbitrage player and they hit, understand what you saw that others missed. That mechanism is repeatable — it’s a systematic edge, not luck.

Be honest when you’re wrong: When an arbitrage play misses, diagnose it — bad luck (injury), or was your thesis wrong? A thesis that was wrong should update your process; bad luck shouldn’t.
