Best Ball ADP Strategy: How to Beat Average Draft Position and Find Value
ADP — Average Draft Position — is what the consensus market thinks a player is worth in a given draft format. Most managers treat it as a guide. The best best-ball managers treat it as a baseline to beat.
The goal: consistently draft players at prices that undervalue their expected production. Over a full season, the managers who do this most systematically win more often.

Why ADP Misprice Happens
Recency bias: ADP is heavily influenced by how players finished last season. A player who closed on a hot streak gets drafted 2–3 rounds higher the following year even when their underlying situation doesn’t support the optimism. The reverse is also true: a player who struggled in the second half — even for reasons now resolved — gets drafted later than their expected role warrants.
Narrative lag: The market responds to news with a delay. A player who changed teams in free agency won’t have their new ADP fully priced for 1–2 weeks after the move. Drafting during that window means getting them at the old-situation price.
Name premium: Established names carry brand recognition that inflates their ADP beyond what their current role supports. A former Pro Bowler who’s now a WR3 still gets drafted in the WR2 range for the first season or two of their decline.
Positional scarcity anchor: Managers anchor to scarcity signals from previous years that may no longer apply. If last year’s TE1 is gone and this year’s TE pool is deeper, the top TEs shouldn’t command the same premium — but they often still do.
How to Find ADP Value
Method 1 — Track news and draft early after it breaks. When a player changes roles (new team, new scheme, injury recovery, depth chart clarification), their ADP takes days to adjust. Drafting within 24–48 hours of positive news often gets you the player at pre-news prices. Particularly useful in best ball formats with rolling drafts all summer.
Method 2 — Compare opportunity to pedigree. The question isn’t “is this a good player?” The question is “will they have enough opportunity to produce?” For each player you target: projected target share or carry share, whether the offense supports that production, and whether the path to that role is clear or injury-dependent.
Method 3 — Exploit positional scarcity timing. If the TE rush starts in Round 4 and takes all top TEs faster than expected, the WRs who would have gone in Round 4 are still available in Round 5. The WRs didn’t become worse — they just became available later.
Method 4 — Fade consensus early-round picks selectively. Every draft has one or two first-round picks the market loves that don’t have the upside to win your tournament. If you fade one and take a slightly lower-ADP player with higher ceiling, you’ve created relative value. This is contrarian — it only pays off if your read is right, but it’s a legitimate strategy.
ADP Value by Position
QB: Most overvalued when they’re drafted 10–12 picks earlier than their production tier supports. In best ball, QBs 4–12 produce similarly in peak weeks — the gap isn’t as wide as ADP implies. Best value: late QBs in Rounds 8–10 in high-scoring systems.
RB: Most overvalued when an aging back with strong name recognition is now in a committee. Best value: young RBs in clear lead-role situations who haven’t had a breakout season yet — the market anchors to history, and young RBs without history are priced at their floor.
WR: Most overvalued when a WR2 on a high-profile offense benefits from the QB’s halo. A WR2 on a great offense is valuable, but not as much as a WR1 on a slightly less heralded offense. Best value: new team fits — receivers who moved to a better opportunity, usually 2–3 weeks before their ADP fully adjusts.
TE: Most overvalued in non-TE-premium formats — positional scarcity is real but often over-drafted. Best value: taking two mid-tier TEs instead of one expensive TE; in best ball you don’t have to choose weekly, so the hedge approach is specifically suited to the format.
Tracking Your ADP Accuracy
After the season, review where you drafted players relative to ADP and which players beat or missed. The goal is pattern recognition:
- Are you consistently early on a certain player type?
- Are you consistently late on another?
- Do your reads on specific positions trend right or wrong?
The managers who improve most over time do this systematically — they know their own biases.
