Best Ball Negative Correlation: How to Avoid Players Who Cancel Each Other Out

The flip side of stacking: best ball drafters know that positive correlation — stacking a quarterback with his pass-catchers — amplifies a roster’s ceiling because the players boom together. The mirror image is negative correlation, where two of your players tend to score well in opposite scenarios, so when one booms the other busts, and they partially cancel each other out. Negative correlation does not sink a roster the way poor player selection does, and it matters less than capturing positive correlation, but it can quietly flatten your ceiling — the very thing best ball tournaments reward. Understanding the common negatively-correlated pairings and avoiding the worst of them is a finishing touch on a well-constructed best ball roster, ensuring your players work together rather than against each other.


Avoiding Negative Correlation

What negative correlation is:

The concept: (1) negatively-correlated players score well in opposite situations — when game flow or outcomes favor one, they tend to disfavor the other, so the players rarely have big weeks together and partially offset each other; (2) it flattens your ceiling — because best ball rewards spike weeks, a roster whose players cancel each other out has fewer of the simultaneous big weeks that win tournaments, which lowers its top-end outcomes; (3) it is the mirror of stacking — where a stack amplifies your ceiling by having players boom together, negative correlation dampens it by having them boom apart; (4) it is usually a subtle, secondary effect rather than a roster-killer, but it works against the ceiling-chasing that best ball is built around.

What to watch for: (1) a quarterback and the opposing defense — if you somehow roster a quarterback and a DST facing him, they directly oppose each other, which is the clearest negative correlation (mostly relevant in formats with DST); (2) two running backs from the same backfield — in a committee, the backs split the same workload, so one’s big game often comes at the other’s expense, making them negatively correlated and a poor pairing (see our committee backfields guide); (3) a player and the opposing players in a low-total game — pairing players on opposite sides of a game expected to be low-scoring means neither has much ceiling and they compete for limited scoring; (4) over-pairing within one defense’s matchup, where your players’ outcomes are tied to a single game going a way that cannot favor all of them.

Why it matters less than positive correlation, and how to manage it:

Keeping it in proportion: (1) prioritize capturing positive correlation first — stacking your quarterbacks with their pass-catchers is the bigger edge, so focus on building stacks before worrying about avoiding negative correlation; (2) avoid the worst negative pairings — steer clear of the clear-cut cases (same-backfield committee backs, a QB and the opposing DST), since these directly cap your ceiling for no benefit; (3) do not over-engineer it — chasing perfect anti-correlation across your whole roster is not worth sacrificing value or ceiling, so treat negative-correlation avoidance as a tiebreaker, not a primary driver; (4) integrate it as a finishing check on roster construction — once you have built for ceiling, depth, and positive correlation (per the best ball draft strategy hub), a quick scan for glaring negative pairings is the final polish.

Worked Example: Same Backfield Trap

You draft two running backs from the same ambiguous backfield because both are cheap. The problem is that their best outcomes may block each other. If one player wins early-down and goal-line work, the other may lose the very role you needed. You have bought the same uncertainty twice.

There are exceptions when the price is low and both backs can score in different roles, but the default is caution. Best ball wants multiple spike paths, not two players fighting over the same one.

Common mistake: assuming cheap teammates create safety. In many backfields, they create overlap without adding enough ceiling.

Using It As A Final Check

Negative correlation should be a final scan, not the main draft engine. First build value, ceiling, and positive correlation. Then ask whether any pairings quietly work against the roster’s best outcomes.

If the answer is yes and the players are close in value, pivot. If the negatively correlated player is clearly underpriced, value can still win. The goal is avoiding unnecessary ceiling caps, not creating perfect theoretical purity.

Portfolio View

Across multiple entries, some negative correlation may be acceptable because different drafts express different season scripts. The issue is repeating the same cannibalizing structure too often. If several rosters depend on one ambiguous backfield resolving in contradictory ways, the portfolio may be less diversified than it appears.
