Best Ball Roster Correlation: Stacking, Anti-Correlation, and How to Balance Both
“Correlation” refers to how connected two players’ performances are. Positively correlated players tend to have big games at the same time. Anti-correlated players tend to peak on different weeks. Understanding this helps you build a roster that fires in multiple scenarios — not one that scores 170 when one team has a big passing day, but also 80 when they don’t.

Why Pure Stacking Is Risky
If your entire lineup is concentrated on one or two teams:
Best case: That team has a monster offensive game. You score 175 points and beat the field.
Worst case: Your QB has an off game, the team falls behind and runs the ball, or key receivers are covered out of the game. You score 70 points against a week where everyone else averages 100.
The tail outcomes of a heavily correlated roster are extreme. This is why tournament players love heavy stacks — the ceiling is enormous. But without anti-correlation, the downside is equally enormous.
Building a Balanced Correlated Roster
The two-stack structure:
- Stack 1: QB1 + his primary WR (or top 2 WRs)
- Stack 2: QB2 + a WR from his offense
- These two stacks are independent — if QB1’s offense struggles, Stack 2 can still fire when QB2 has a big week
Independent floor players:
- 1–2 high-floor RBs not tied to specific game scripts (workhorse RBs)
- These contribute regardless of passing environment and give a baseline score even if both stacks underperform in a week
Range-of-outcomes diversity among WRs:
- Mix high-ceiling (TD-dependent) and high-floor (PPR/volume) WRs
- If every WR is TD-dependent, a week with few TDs scored collapses your entire lineup
Tournament vs. Regular Season Best Ball
Tournament (large field, winner-take-all): Push toward more correlation — bigger primary stack, possibly a third WR from the same offense. Ceiling is more important than floor; accept that the roster will boom or bust.
Regular season (moderate-sized field, percentage cash): More balanced correlation. Ensure floor coverage that produces when stacks don’t fire. Two independent stacks protect against any single game being a dud.
