Best Ball Anti-Correlation Stacks: How to Use Negative Correlation in Best Ball Rosters

Why anti-correlation has a specific but limited role in best ball construction: most best ball stacking discussion focuses on positive correlation — pairing players who score together (a QB and his WR1, or two WRs on the same high-scoring offense). But anti-correlation also exists: players whose scores tend to move in opposite directions. The classic anti-correlation situation is a pass-catching back on one team versus the receivers on the opposing team — when the pass-catching back’s team is behind (throwing to him in checkdowns), the opposing team’s receivers may be seeing limited targets as their team runs out the clock. The best use is as a tiebreaker. If two players are similar values and one reduces an overconcentration problem, take that one. If the anti-correlated player is clearly worse, do not force it.

Think of anti-correlation as risk shaping. It can smooth some outcomes, but smoothing is not always the goal. In large tournaments, too much smoothing can turn a roster into a median build with no path to first place.

Use it where the roster already has plenty of ceiling and needs a little more independence.

The final check is simple: does this pick make the roster more useful, or just more comfortable? Comfort is not enough. The pick still needs points, role, and a believable path to matter.
