Scoring Correlation in Best Ball: Why Your Players' Scores Move Together
In weekly redraft, correlation matters a little. In best ball — where the automated lineup picks your best scorers each week — it matters enormously. Building positive correlation into your roster means that on ceiling weeks, multiple players benefit at the same time. Without it, your ups and downs cancel out and your ceiling is capped.

The Stack Structure in Detail
QB + WR1: The most direct positive correlation in fantasy. When a QB throws for 400 yards and 4 TDs, his WR1 likely caught 6–7 balls for 100+ yards with 1–2 TDs. Both score huge simultaneously — and best ball’s automated lineup picks both.
QB + WR2: When the WR1 is covered or limited, volume often shifts to WR2. Still correlated, slightly less so than WR1. Useful as the third piece of a stack.
QB + pass-catching RB: Lower correlation than receivers but real — in pass-heavy games, the RB’s receiving production increases with game script. Valid as a stack extension rather than a primary piece.
The game stack extension:
- Draft QB Team A + WR1 Team A (primary stack)
- Draft WR1 Team B (game stack — opponent of Team A)
In a high-total shootout, all three players benefit. In a defensive slugfest, your stack underperforms — but so does every other manager’s stack from that game.
How Much Correlation Is Enough
Recommended structure:
- 1–2 primary stacks (QB + 2 receivers from the same team)
- 1 game stack extension (opposing team’s WR1 in the same high-total game)
- Remaining roster: diversified, independent high-upside players
This creates meaningful ceiling in 2–4 games per season where a stack explodes. The diversified rest of your roster provides floor and catches weeks when stacks underperform.
What to avoid: A roster with only one stack and zero diversity. Either the stack fires (massive week) or it doesn’t (below average every other week). The best best ball rosters have multiple potential ceiling games, not one all-in bet.
Measuring Correlation
Analytics sites (FantasyPros, PlayerProfiler, Air Yards) publish correlation matrices between QBs and their receivers. A correlation coefficient above 0.5 is meaningful positive correlation; below 0.3 is weak.
For practical drafting: players on the same offense, in the same high-value game, who touch the ball in correlated ways are your best sources. You don’t need the exact coefficient — just the principle applied consistently.
