Best Ball Touchdown Upside: How to Draft Players With Red Zone and Scoring Roles

Touchdowns are worth 6 points each. A player who catches one touchdown per game adds 6 points per week in base scoring — the equivalent of 60 rushing yards or 60 receiving yards. Identifying players who score touchdowns consistently, or who are in positions to score them more often than their overall usage suggests, creates reliable best ball ceiling.

Why Touchdowns Matter More in Best Ball

Touchdowns produce explosive weeks. A WR who catches 6 passes for 90 yards in a no-TD game scores 9 points in PPR. Add two touchdowns to those 6 catches and 90 yards, and the same game becomes 21 points. The difference between a solid week and a ceiling week is almost always touchdowns.

In best ball, you capture your players’ best weeks automatically. Players who produce touchdown ceilings regularly — even if their yardage totals are modest — contribute more ceiling weeks than volume-heavy players who rarely score.

Touchdown regression is real but slow. Touchdown rates are volatile year-to-year. A WR who catches 12 TDs one season will likely not catch 12 the next year — the average WR returns toward 6–8 TDs. But the volatility is a feature in best ball: if you are drafting enough players with TD upside, some of them will have explosive touchdown seasons even when their rate regresses.


Red Zone Target Share

The most predictive TD metric. Touchdowns in the passing game come primarily from red zone opportunities (inside the 20-yard line). The most reliable predictor of WR and TE touchdown frequency is red zone target share — what percentage of the team’s red zone passing targets go to that player.

A WR who receives 25% of his team’s red zone targets will score more TDs than a WR who receives 10%, regardless of their total target share.

TEs and the red zone. TEs are disproportionately valuable in the red zone because they are often the largest target in the passing game and offensive coordinators trust them in high-leverage situations. A TE who receives 30%+ of his team’s red zone targets scores touchdowns at a rate that inflates his fantasy value significantly above his total target share.

Role continuity check. For the draft, the relevant question is not just last year’s red zone target share, but whether that role is expected to continue: Is the player still in the same offense with the same role? Did the player’s red zone competition change (new WR joined, TE added)? Is the player injury-healthy going into the season?


Goal-Line Rushing TDs

RB touchdown upside from goal-line role. Not all RBs carry equivalent touchdown upside. The RB who gets the ball inside the 5-yard line — the goal-line back — scores far more touchdowns than the RB who handles the outside zone carries. In some offenses, the goal-line role is clearly separated: a primary pass-catching back handles most of the carries, but a larger short-yardage specialist gets the touchdowns inside the 5.

In best ball, identifying the goal-line carrier and including him as a depth add — even if his overall usage is limited — provides TD upside that his total touch count does not fully capture.


Stacking for Touchdown Amplification

QB-WR stacks and TD correlation. When a QB throws a TD pass to one of your WRs, both players score simultaneously. A 30-point game for the QB almost always involves multiple touchdowns — and the WRs catching those touchdowns are on your roster. The stack amplifies TD production across roster spots.

For best ball purposes, a primary stack (QB + WR1) captures the highest-volume target relationship and the most likely TD sharing. A bring-back (adding a WR from the opposing team) captures TD upside from the game script where one team responds to the other’s scoring.
